Earlier in summer, I had the pleasure of meeting up with the lovely Tori, a fellow blogger based right here in Jersey.
Bloggers are a bit of an anomaly in Jersey, there are only a few of us around, but we all completely love what we do and especially love sharing the beauty of the island with our readers.
Tori is particularly good at this. She has a fantastic eye for photography, which you will clearly see is evident on her blog. Tori is a country girl through and through. She uses her blog to share the beauty of Jersey’s nature and wildlife with you, documenting her adventures in the great outdoors and beyond.
If you want to take a look at real country life in Jersey, then A Bit of a Boost is where you need to be! We had a catch up and stroll along the beach, whilst Tori answered some questions about her blog, so you can get to know her a little better!
So here it is, meet Tori….
What was the inspiration for starting A Bit of a Boost?
I’ve always been very creative, and I get bored easily, so am always looking for something new to do/create/make/learn. I’ve always had a love for the countryside and photography, and starting a blog that centred around these things seemed really fun. I also did a Masters in journalism, and we were taught how to make good blogs there…which was definitely helpful!
What do you want people to take away from reading your blog?
I just want people to enjoy reading it and looking at the photos I take. I think it’s always nice to spread happiness so I like to focus on the positive things. I also would love to inspire people to get outside and appreciate the little things around them – like the other day, I saw a white bumblebee! If people took a step outside and just looked around, they could be amazed and inspired.
Who has impacted you most in blogging and how?
The first blog I ever read was Cherry Menlove’s (yes, that is her real name). She writes a lifestyle blog about her family life at home, based in the English countryside, and she has tutorials on crafts and recipes…it really sparked something inside me. Now, my favourite blogger is Rosie Chappel from Cider with Rosie – she’s very similar in that it’s a lifestyle blog based in the countryside, but her view on life and it’s ‘little joys’, as she says, always brings a smile to my face. She’s also a great photographer and has beautiful, simple style in what she wears.
What is your greatest achievement outside of blogging?
Gosh, that’s a tough question! I’ve done lots of things that have been amazing and that I have enjoyed, but achievement wise? Getting my Masters from Falmouth with a distinction – I was kind of proud of myself then…and every time I take a new photo that is better than the last, that’s an achievement to me.
What is your favourite part of living in Jersey?
The sea, beaches and countryside. I honestly think you could not get bored in Jersey (if you like the outdoors) – you could take up so many cool sports like surfing, paddle-boarding, sailing, cycling…and Jersey is a haven for them all. I adore going for walks on the beaches and in the countryside, and being able to go surfing or paddle-boarding after work because everything is so close. Jersey also feels very safe and cosy.
What are your hobbies outside of blogging?
I like to paddle-board and surf in the summer, as much as I can! The saltwater on my skin and in my hair brings me such joy. This year I have been teaching myself yoga and that has become a huge and integral part of my life now – I actually crave the stretches and the calmness and meditation that it brings – so I think I will be continuing that into the winter. I also love making things…anything…usually Pinterest inspired.
What has been the favourite blog post you have written?
My favourite blog posts have actually been about other people! I love writing about me, and I intend to do a lot more of that, but I’m also very curious and like knowing about others and what makes them tick. So, your interview and the photoshoot, and also Jersey Naturalist’s. In terms of posts about me, probably ‘Into the Woods’ when Aaron (my boyfriend) and I went for a stroll in the woods and I took some cute photos and it was lovely us-time.
How would you like to develop your blog in the future?
I actually want to add a You-Tube element to it and have been compiling some shots recently…so hopefully I’ll be brave enough to start that soon! I would also love to branch out on the photography side and offer my services to others.
Really, I just aim to keep enjoying it, grow my following, and to make others smile and be inspired!
What advice would you give to anyone wanting to get into blogging?
I’m no pro yet…but as general life advice goes… I would say forget what others think of you. I used to be so concerned about this, and actually the weirdest things I have done in life are what have made me who I am and why my friends love me. If Zoella and Tanya Burr, or Cider with Rosie, worried about what others thought they would have never started their blogs or vlogs and wouldn’t be doing so well now!
Also, blog about something you are interested in, not just what others are blogging about – I promise there will be like-minded people out there. Finally – drop me and email and say hi!
If you would like to keep up to date with Tori’s blog, you can find her on the A Bit of a Boost website, or on her newest channel over on Youtube. Tori is also on Facebook and Twitter, so there’s no excuse not to head over and join her on her adventures. Enjoy!
