This past week, I have been working with JT in Jersey, to help them review some of the newer products on the market.
First up, I was given the Samsung Gear VR to try out. When I first looked at this ‘contraption’ I thought there was no way I was ever going to get into using it. I couldn’t have been more wrong!
It looks quite daunting and rather large at first glance, but it is actually surprisingly light weight.
This headset is a virtual reality viewer, that brings games and movies to life. It is compatible with the Samsung Galaxy S6 or S7 phones and is super easy to use.
You will need to download the appropriate app onto your phone, which will self load when you connect the phone to the device.
I was using the Galaxy S6 to test out the headset, which was really easy to navigate, considering I usually use another brand of phone… a relief considering I was already having to learn how to use the Gear VR!
To get started, you simply snap your phone in to the front of the Gear VR, making sure that the screen is unlocked, and you’re ready to go.
On the righthand side of the headset you will find a touchpad, which allows you to navigate around the menu through the viewer, there’s a crosshair in the middle to keep you on track and show you where you’re pointing. This can take some getting used to, but there is even a game built in to the app, which takes you on a crash course of learning the controls, whilst also being quite funny!
To select a game or to view something, you simply tap the middle of the control pad, and if you make a mistake, press the back button. Simples!
The main thing to note about the Gear VR, is the absolutely outstanding display! I genuinely couldn’t believe how much it transported you into, well… a virtual reality! You can turn your head 360 degrees (sit on a spinning chair for ease of use), and the graphics are amazing.
When you first put the headset on, you will see a menu in front of you, where you can choose games you have already downloaded, go to the store and purchase new games, or even watch Netflix! Before you even choose what you’d like to view though, take a look around and you will find you’re sat in a VR living room with a view out to the mountains – amazing!
I actually spent a couple of hours using the Gear VR, before I’d even realised where the time had gone, truly blown away by the way it can transport you into another world and how addictive it is.
In fact, the Gear VR was so good, that I actually thought it would be selfish to keep it to myself! So instead, I asked a couple of friends to meet up and give me their opinions. Here’s what they had to say…..
Andrew ‘Wes’ Forster of Lumiere Wealth and self confessed tech junky.
“As a massive gadget fan I could not pass up an opportunity to try out the Gear VR. First impressions, it looks great it is bulky but strangely you don’t notice any weight to it when you put it on. Although I did feel like ‘Abraham ‘Abe’ Sapien’ from Hellboy. With a little adjustment on the focus you are presented with a fantastic picture and an intuitive menu system.
First I elected to watch Cirque du Soleil. Upon selecting, you are greeted by a group of performers who come charging off the stage in a frenzy of excitement, they all sit around you to watch two performers on the stage. If you turn your head around you can see the cast sitting around you, and they encourage you to not look at them and to watch the show. If you keep turning around and look behind you see all the seats and the back of the theatre, you feel truly immersed in the show.
Finally I watched a short film on Netflix, this I truly loved. I expected just to see a the TV programme, but oh no, the experience gives you so much more. I was sat in the TV room in a big house and as I turned my head I could see a window and out of the window there were snow capped mountains. I found it thoroughly awesome. I have used VR headsets many years ago but they where not up to much, however it looks like the technology is now here.”

“At first view I was very sceptical of the device and the reasons why one would need/want to do such a thing………. I tried it on……. and I didn’t want to take it off! I loved it and can totally see why one would want one. However, since then I do keep singing Virtual Insanity by Jamiroquai (showing my age!) – I think he was on to something.”
So there you have it, tried, tested and loved by everyone! The Gear VR retails at just £89.00 from JT, and the best part is, you can even add it on to your pay monthly plan!
Something not many people are aware of, is that you can add up to 4 devices on your pay monthly plan, which doesn’t just include mobile phones. You can also add the Gear VR, a games console, gadgets and many other products from JT. The Gear VR starts from just £4 per month, a bargain for the amount of fun you can have with it!
You can pop in to the JT store and pick one up, or check out their website to see what else is available.
Enjoy your virtual reality!
