Polo Bar at Westbury Hotel, Mayfair

I’ve been to quite a few bars on my travels to London and they have all been nice, but Polo Bar at The Westbury absolutely outdid them all, and then some.

You’ve probably already seen my other blog post on The Westbury Hotel and how much they spoilt me with their amazing new suite, but little did I know that things were about to get even better.

The team had found out that I was over to attend the UK Blog Awards and celebrate being a shortlisted Lifestyle Blog finalist 2016. I expected nothing at all, but what I received was treatment befitting of royalty.

A Champagne greeting on arrival – check. An upgrade to an amazing suite – check. A complimentary cocktail and canapé evening – check! Yep, you read that right, they really did lay on cocktails and canapés! I was so taken aback by the offer, I quickly agreed and then asked all my friends to change their plans and meet me at the hotel to accept their generous offer (luckily they adapted!).

Anyway, enough gushing over my weekend! I know you’re really dying to know about the cocktails!

We arrived to a glamours, wooden clad bar entrance. The bar was a hive of activity in the evening, a social gathering ground and a hotbed for late meetings. I don’t think I could even count the various nationalities that were present, Polo Bar is a hub of international activity, which gives it such a diverse atmosphere and an air of sophistication.

We were promptly ushered inside and shown to our table, nestled next to the window. Our host for the evening was the lovely Alex, an effortlessly friendly and professional gentleman. He made us feel so welcome and explained the menu away to us, giving us his recommendations for a great cocktail.

I usually play it pretty safe when it comes to cocktails and stick to maybe 2 or 3 that I am certain I like, but in the interest of trying new things this weekend, I decided to stray from my norm. For our first round of cocktails, we tried…..

The Modern Cosmo {A twist on the classic with Ketel One vodka infused with cranberries, shaken with Pierre Ferrand orange curacao, fresh lime and sugar}

Pomegranate Deluxe {Bombay Sapphire gin shaken with elderflower, lemon and freshly squeezed pomegranate juice A proper balance of flavour, topped up with Moët Brut NV}

Dirty Martini {A classic, Gin, dry vermouth, olive brine}

They were all totally delicious, the Modern Cosmo was my absolute favourite, which is odd considering I’ve never actually liked a Cosmo before – yet another great chance which paid off!

A fantastic little touch by the team, was to offer a taster of each of the other cocktails on the table. We all received our main cocktails and a miniature sized glass of something that had been ordered by a friend, it was a great way to get us to try something we wouldn’t normally choose, and actually opened my eyes to a few other cocktails I never knew I liked!

We toasted our first round and smiled as our canapés arrived at the table. A selection of Smoked Salmon Cones {London smoked salmon mousse, creme fraiche, Aquitaine caviar and chives} and Panko Crusted Prawns {King prawns coated in  Panko breadcrumbs, served with sweet chilli dip}.

Both were really flavoursome, the prawns in particular were stunningly crispy outside and delicately cooked inside. Needless to say, they were gone within minutes!

On to round two! We opted for….

Espresso Martini {Vodka, Kahlúa, Espresso Coffee}

Gin & Jam {Elephant gin served long and cool with fresh ginger, raspberry jam and cranberry juice}

Pomegranate Deluxe {they were just so good the first time around, and they are also sprinkled with gold!}

The Gin & Jam is highly recommended. I don’t even like Gin normally, but this was amazing. The combination sounds oddly wrong, but it is just oh so right!

It’s hardly a surprise though, when you consider that Polo Bar was recognised as London’s Bar of the Year 2014 by The London Lifestyle Awards and they also won Best Mixology at the London Club and Bar Awards 2014. A fantastic achievement and completely evident in their extensive menu and exceptional service.

More accompaniments arrived to go with our cocktails, a piping hot round of duck and vegetable spring rolls. I’m a huge fan of both of these and the ones in Polo Bar actually surpassed many I have tried in authentic Chinese restaurants. Crunchy, flaky pastry gave way to seriously tender duck and impeccably seasoned vegetables, bursting with flavour and hugely more-ish!

Whilst at Westbury Hotel, I learnt about another great development on the horizon. Whilst trying to be as economical as possible and give something back to the environment around them, the team came up with the fabulous idea to create a herb garden on the roof. Instead of ordering in produce in bulk which may go to waste, they will soon be able to pick their own herbs from the roof garden, so you can be assured you’re getting the very freshest ingredients when you visit. I’m sure it will be blooming by summer time, you should pop in and ask for a little tour if you’re in the area!

We continued our evening, laughing and joking, sharing exceptional cocktails and discovering new tastes. The Polo Bar really is a great place to be in London, with luxurious furnishings, an eclectic vibe and an expert team – it’s the perfect place to broaden your horizons and try something a little different.

Quite frankly, the team at The Westbury could not have made me feel more like a princess whilst staying with them, even if they had given me a tiara! I was super excited for the weekend away as it was, but what they did was nothing short of amazing. I expected the 5 star service they always provide, but I was totally blown away by generosity and genuine interest and caring about my awards night – I will never forget the luxurious weekend they gave me – thank you Westbury Hotel!
